Kleist’s novel about a man in a corrupt legal system who takes the law into his own hands poses questions about the thin red line between justice and excessive morality. Martin Luther plays a central role as he becomes the intermediate between the state and Kohlhaas. In the wake of the Lutherjahr 2017, Kleist’s novel is not only thematically but – in view of despotic tendencies in various Western countries – also politically more relevant than ever.
