7 to 16 May 2021

Extensive digital program from 7 to 16 May
All other events to be postponed and presented over the course of the year

The 22nd international figuren.theater.festival will offer an ambitious digital theater and film program from 7 to 16 May. Due to rising incidence rates, all in person event formats must be postponed. Meanwhile, the 22nd international figuren.theater.festival 2021 has been revamped three times. In 2020 initially planned with a classical stage performance programme, this was replaced in November by a three-pillared concept consisting of a reduced number of stage performances, special projects and interventions in public spaces and a new digital component. Finally, in February, all conventional theater performances were cancelled and the festival was reconceived as a special edition.

However, all events announced in the program booklet appearing next week, aren’t cancelled but merely postponed. The event organizers promise that they will try to reschedule as many projects as possible over the course of the next months. Most recently, a programme of installations, accessible to the individual or to small groups, one-on-one encounters, as well as several interventions in the public sphere was planned. A parcours of short formats spanning the three cities and addressing the subject matter of “Zäsur 2020 – Theater and Society in Upheaval” provides the political context of this year’s special edition. From 7 to 16 May , a lineup of digital programs will showcase the whole spectrum of innovative and creative ideas that have been developed in the arena of virtual theatre over the last months.

Consisting of approximately twenty elaborate projects, these purely digital, virtual offerings form an extensive, city-overarching  program, which can take place independently of the pandemic. Each of these formats was explicitly developed for virtual space. Some take place over Zoom, as is the case with Interrobang, fringe ensemble + Platform Tiyatro, Simon Senn, Oliver Zahn and SINT, while others such as onlinetheater.live, play over a homepage. Tryouts by florschütz & döhnert, Rafi Martin and Laia RiCa will be streamed live from the Experimentiertheater. In A THOUSAND WAYS (Part One): A Phone Call by 600 HIGHWAYMEN one person encounters another via telephone, younger spectators experience a voyage through their own apartment with pulk fiktion, also via telephone. Additionally, Ariel Doron, Theater Zitadelle / Theater Anna Rampe and United Puppets perform online for children. Alongside fixed-date performances with limited seating, there are projects that extend over the entire festival period and can be experienced alone, such as Laura Tontsch’s Instagame “Der Kult der Toten Kuh” and “#distance” by Viktoria Maier. The projects by Anna Steward and Theater Zwangsvorstellung have both been developed and supported by the ARGE grant, “Kleiner Grenzverkehr,” and are now being realized for the festival.

The digital theatere formats are accompanied by a film series of the Filmhaus in the KunstKulturQuartier, which as part of its kino3 program will include select animation films, puppet theatre documentaries and an exclusive preview of the new “Hinterhaus” programme by Matthias Egersdörfer as streams and as a special offer to those holding a figuren.theater.festival subscription.

Online ticket pre-sales start Saturday, April 24th.
